What is Krasten?

Krasten (formerly known by a few other working titles, such as Runestar and Subgea) is a text-based, single-player role-playing game (RPG) which has been in development for about a year now, heavily inspired by both the multi-user dungeons (MUDs) that were the precursor of modern MMORPGs, as well as roguelikes and open-world RPGs such as the Elder Scrolls series. Runestar is a Single-User Dungeon, a game world with a multitude of possibilities and the freedom to do whatever you want, heroic or villainous, set in a gritty industrialized cyberpunk world.

The game is still heavily under development and it’s still very early days, but my design philosophy for Krasten is simple: the game will never be finished as long as I still have ideas for awesome stuff to add. Want to be a dual-wielding ninja assassin, sneaking through the shadows and ambushing your prey? What about a plasma cannon-wielding tank driver, smashing through walls and pulverizing your foes under a hail of bullets? A prospector mining the depths of the earth for rare and valuable minerals? A warped bio-vizier performing unspeakable genetic experiments? All of this and more will be possible within the text-based world of Krasten, a world I have a frankly ridiculous amount of ideas and plans to develop for a long time into the future.

Aside from simple UI elements, there’s no graphics to speak of in Krasten. Why? Simply put, graphics add a great deal of extra development time to a project, and having no artistic skill of my own, I’d be forced to team up with others in order to create something that looks acceptable. I’ve decided instead to stick with a fairly simple, text-based interface to the world, which leaves me the freedom to be as creative as I like, limited only by my imagination. There’s plenty of games out there with beautiful graphics; this isn’t one of them. Instead, it aims to sacrifice visual fidelity in favour of excessive complexity and depth.

There are currently no public releases of Krasten as I feel the game is still too rough around the edges and lacking in essential features, however once things improve I’ll be posting pre-alpha builds on this blog for people to try. In the meantime, keep an eye on this site for regular devlog posts detailing the advancement of the game development, and of course, if you have any suggestions or ideas you want to throw my way, just drop a comment — I’d love to hear what people think!

Who is Gravecat?

I’m the weirdo behind the scenes, the solo developer working on Krasten. I’m a 36-year-old British nerd currently living in northwest England, who spends far too much time tinkering with C++ and is known for a love of snacks, coffee, and instigating chaos. I identify as non-binary but happy to answer to any pronouns or names, and yes, I’m one of those filthy furries your mother told you to stay away from. First and foremost, however, I am a huge nerd and very happy with my nerdy fate. Hobbies include programming, gaming, attempting cooking, and yelling at clouds. I enjoy doing dumb things like drawing giant jellyfish in the condensation on bus windows.

I’ve been playing computer and video games since I was a kid, and attempting to make my own for much of that time (to little success, as my plans always ended up being far too grand and sprawling to be practical). I was the administrator and overlord of a small social MUCK for a few years, which was the original home of the Industrial Sector (as seen in Krasten, in a modified form) and the original inspiration for the RPG combat system which evolved into what you see here today. In many ways, Krasten is a sort of tribute to the golden age of that crazy old place.
